Australia’s Closest Neighbour
Papua New Guinea is Australia’s closest international neighbour and yet PNG could be on the opposite side of Planet Earth in the middle of the developing world. As Australia is to westernised, Papua New Guinea is to undeveloped or should we say underdeveloped. Papua New Guinea is separated from Australia only by the Torres Strait - a span of water only 160 kilometres wide, major shipping lane, dotted with the islands that make up the Torres Strait Island communities and still a part of Queensland, and then to the north of the Torres Strait, within 2 kilometres of the most northern Queensland Communities of Boigu, Saibai and Dauan lies Papua New Guinea – A former Australian protectorate and since 1975 an independent country and member state of the Commonwealth.

Divided into 19 provinces, as a single country, Papua New Guinea is without doubt the most culturally diverse country in the world. With a population of around 5.9 million people made up of more than 800 different language and clan groups. It is a credit to its people that in these changing times it has remained as cohesive as it has.

Stone Age to Space Age
In a single generation the people of Papua New Guinea are transitioning from subsistence farming to desiring the same modern technologies and equipment as the western world – TV, Internet, University Education, Cars, Housing, Electricity and Travel. The Industrial Revolution that finished in Europe more than 200 years ago is still underway in PNG. It's People are moving from the countryside to the capital of Port Moresby and to all the Provincial Centres in search of a better life but at the same time the traditions of more than 800 ancient cultures remain.

There is archive film footage of the arrival of the first Westerners into the Highlands – this was put together in a Documentary called "First Contact". Stories still exist of highland tribes that have yet to meet their first westerners. The missionaries did a lot to convert Papua New Guineans to Christianity but this happened more in the New Guinea Islands than in the Highlands.
