Manus Island is an amazing place geographically and culturally. It is very remote and the people live a very traditional lifestyle. Chopon Surf lodge is located in a “village” which is made up of basic houses sparsely spread across the jungle and where guests can immerse themselves in the local culture and daily routines. These include fishing for your dinner (don’t worry, if you can’t catch anything the locals definitely will), snorkelling, playing in the water and enjoying a beer in the evening. No wonder no one is stressed. The accommodation and facilities are basic but what you gain is a genuine insight into life in PNG village.

Your host Jeffrey is a fantastic, if subtle, guide and as you spend time with him you will learn many things about the PNG culture such as their religious beliefs and social customs. The Chopon vibe is as much a cultural experience as a surf trip. Having said that the focus is on surfing and you will be doing a whole lot of that, there are waves that a few other surfers have sampled as well as loads more yet to be explored.

Chopon Surf Lodge is a three bedroom and one common room house on the point next to Backyard. The point has a nice sandy beach full of starfish, protected coral reefs for snorkelling nearby and fantastic fishing. You can walk across the passage to Coronat Island on a low tide. You can also paddle from here to Backyard and Kay. The house is built out if the same materials as per the local houses. It is be elevated off the ground with floorboards and a woven sago palm roof and walls. There is no air conditioning or ceiling fans but these styles of houses are pretty cool as they are built under trees and have plenty of ventilation.

We will be eating as the locals do. That means fish, rice, sweet potatoes, sago and fruit (the pineapples are out of this world and bananas come in numerous, delicious varieties) for lunch and dinner. For breakfast we will have bread, fruit, eggs and powdered milk (there are no fridges in the village) as well as coffee and tea. Again, simple but genuine and delicious.
