BIRDWATCHING TOURS
PNG offers some of the world’s best birding – from the Kiunga lowland rainforests to the highland heaths of the Tari Gap and the savannah lands of Port Moresby. With the right itinerary even the shorter trips here can usually find about 20 species of birds of paradise. New Guinea and its off-shore islands, as a whole, have over 400 endemic species, the single greatest concentration on earth. Birds are endemic to individual islands or archipelagos and a lot of travel is needed to see them all. New Guinea is often subdivided into 3 distinct area for birding: Indonesian Papua, the Papua New Guinea mainland and the New Guinea Islands.
Our Bird watching operator was the first tour company to regularly visit Bougainville when it reopened, and actively work with local people there to make it more accessible to birders. In 2011 they were the first bird group to stay at Philip’s guest house situated in the burnt out shell of the men’s quarters at Panguna mine!
Many species are shy and low-density but the rewards are immense. We offer a number of itineraries of varying lengths to destinations throughout the country. Our “Taste of New Guinea” birding tours are designed to be easily slotted together to make for more comprehensive and extended itineraries. If you do not see one you like, we are happy to personalise one for you based on your own species wish list, available time and finances and can combine these with cultural interest tours, provincial shows and all other options.
