OTHER ACCOMMODATION IN THE HIGHLANDS AND SEPIK REGION

This page offers accommodation in some of the less populated towns, outposts and villages in the West Sepik and Highlands region of mainland Papua New Guinea.

Vanimo is the capital of West Sepik or Sandaun (sun down) province. It has a population of around 12,000 people and is located approximately 30 kms from the Indonesian border. It relies on logging as its main source of income and in the summer months is popular with surfers, as this coastline has some of the most consistent breaks in the country.

Hela Province is famous for PNG’s most recognised indigenous tribes, the Huli people, with their bright yellow and red war paint and feathered headdresses. Its is also home to many endemic bird species, due to its high altitude and remoteness. These activities are accessible from Tari, and in particular, Ambua Lodge, where we can arrange fully escorted bird and cultural activities.

The Sepik Spirit and Karawari Lodge are situated in a remote tributary of the Mighty Sepik River. Both are very popular with tourists due to the serenity, incredible culture and range of birds in this region. This is the real PNG, weith people living in stilt villages, living off the land and river carving their tools, bowls and canoes from the local trees. The only way in or out is by private aircraft so we include these in our costs.
