Wildriver Fishing Charters

The winner of many local sport fishing tournaments, Jason Yip has been fishing for over 20 years in and around Port Moresby rivers and creeks. A local of Chinese descent, Jason has been taking guided fishing tours for the past seven years and has a close relationship with local villagers and landowners, allowing access to waters that otherwise could not be reached. He puts resources back into the communities, ensuring that the local children have access to a good education.

There are many fishing options from day trips to extended charters:

Galley Reach - Day trip

There are three tours to choose from around the waters of Galley Reach, being bottom fishing, troll and cast with lures, and live bait fishing. Mangrove Jack, Trevally, Cods and Bream species and Grunter can be found here, as well as the famous PNG Black Bass and Barramundi. 

Galley Reach is located around 75 kms west of Port Moresby. It is a large estuary basin with a number of fresh water rivers which feed into it. The majority of the rivers derive from the Owen Stanley Ranges and meet toward the basin. There are also many mangrove creeks found in the system.

You'll be picked up from your hotel at 6.30 and after a 75 minute drive, you'll be in one of the many river systems. Fishing tackle, bait, boat and guide, eskies and ice are supplied, and you'll be returned to your hotel around 5 pm that day. 2-3 people per boat are required for these tours.

Vanapa River - Day trip

45 minutes from Port Moresby, you can try your luck pulling in a 'freight train' in one of the log jams in the Vanapa River. You'll be picked up at 6.30 am and returned to your hotel by 6 pm, with all equipment supplied. 2 persons per boat is required.

Aroa River - Day trip

On this tour, lunch and soft drinks are supplied as well as all tackle and bait, for the drive to Jason's favourite river, the Aroa. Around 90 minutes from POM, pick up is at 6.30 am, and barramundi and bass are the targeted species. You'll be returned to your hotel ready for a good night's sleep after feeling like you've just gone 10 rounds with Mohammed Ali!

Galley Reach, Vanapa and Aroa River - Overnight tours

These tours allow more time for your favourite pasttime, which include motel accommodation, 3 meals per day, as well as all the inclusions in the above tours. Mix it up a bit with a different style of fishing each day. We need 2 people per boat for this one, for 1-3 nights.

Terapo Lodge - 3 to 6 nights

Black Bass, Barramundi, Mangrove Jack, Fingermark Bream, Giant Trevally, Grunter, Threadfin Salmon and Estuary Cod are just some of the fish caught on this adventure. Located 215 kms west of Port Moresby, in the Gulf Province, Terapo Fishing Lodge is a basic but comfortable 5 bedroom building owned by the Catholic Mission, situated between the Lakekamu and the Tauri Rivers.

The lodge has all the facilities you'll need to be well rested for the fight you'll have with the tough Bass or Barra each day. You'll receive 3 hearty meals a day, cooked by an experienced chef, with a beer*, wine*, soft drink or a cuppa to wash it down. All entry permits, guides, laundry service and tranditional welcoming are included in the cost of the tour.

The rivers are clean and low in the dry season, from May to November and is the optimal time of year to fish here. During the wet season, they are muddy and prone to flooding. We recommend you allow at least 5 days for this trip, which requires a 4-5 hour scenic drive each way from Port Moresby. You will be picked up from the airport or your accommodation and driven in air conditioned comfort along the picturesque Hiritano Highway, taking in small villages, iron bridges and the Owen Stanley Ranges. Upon arrival, a cold drink and lunch is served before getting stuck into the important stuff - fishing.

Your trip has an experienced angler with you, plus guides from the surrounding villages. There are 4 aluminium 399 Proline boats with 30hp 4 stroke motors, and comfortable swivel seats for 2 anglers per boat to allow you plenty of room to cast.
