Finschhafen Weekender

Day 1: Friday Depart Port Moresby at 6.00am on PX 100 to Lae, arriving 6.45am. On arrival you will be met and transferred straight to the Lae wharf by Niugini Bus Lines. You will board the MV Gejamsao that leaves for Finschhafen at 9.00am and arrives at Finschhafen at 11.00am (Niugini Bus Lines will pre-purchase your tickets for you). Somebody from the Huon Peninsula Lodge will meet you at Finschhafen wharf and take you to the Lodge which is only a short walk away. After lunch a local guide will take you for a stroll around the township: show where everything is, where to walk, where you can swim etc. The rest of the afternoon is yours to enjoy beautiful Finschhafen. Overnight at Huon Peninsula Lodge in standard airconditioned twin-share room, includes lunch, dinner and breakfast.

Day 2: Saturday Early morning jogging or walking along the beach OR bring your binoculars and your guide will take you for an early bird watching walk through nearby coconut plantations and light forest where you can see and hear a variety of parrots, lorikeets and other species greeting the new day. After a late breakfast at the lodge your guide will arrange a vehicle to take you on an orientation trip to Butaweng Falls, Malasiga Village and the Simbang Memorial Church (the birthplace of the Lutheran Church in PNG – it has carved pillars which record the history of the church). After lunch, a free afternoon which you can spend back at beautiful Butaweng Falls, or on the beach (swimming, snorkelling, beachcombing). Overnight Huon Peninsula Lodge.

Day 3: Sunday Today a day trip is arranged to nearby Tami Island by outboard dinghy. Tami Island has a very distinct culture – the people are prolific artisans and spectacular carved artifacts are available for inspection and sale. There is very good snorkelling at Tami Island – BYO mask and snorkel. Your guide with accompany you and arrange everything. You can spend either a half day or full day on the island depending on your interest. Lunch is not provided but plenty of fresh fruit and cooked fish is available from the village market on the island. (NB if the weather is unsuitable this day trip can be postponed until tomorrow.) Overnight Huon Peninsula Lodge.

Day 4: Monday Today is a free day to select your own activity. Some suggestions: - Ask the lodge to prepare a packed lunch for you and spend the day at Butaweng Falls including a jungle walk (your guide is always available to accompany you). - Explore Scarlet Beach where relics from WW2 landings abound. - Take a hike up into the hills overlooking the Finschhafen coastline for panoramic views. - Snorkel along the beach. - By arrangement, visit the local primary school and give an impromptu talk to the kids about your occupation or the place you come from – this is a remote area without TV and the kids don’t get much exposure to people from other places.

Day 5: Tuesday After breakfast, walk down to the wharf to board MV Gejamsao departing for Lae at 10.00am and arriving at 12.00 noon. Niugini Bus Lines will meet you and transfer you to Nadzab Airport for your flight PX 109 to Port Moresby departing at 4.40pm.

TOUR NOTES:
1. This tour involves travel to a remote area where medical facilities are not available.
2. The two free day trips that are stated as being part of this package are categorised as “free add-ons” to your airfare and accommodation package and are not redeemable for cash if not used or not provided.
3. Finschhafen is a high rainfall area and your daily program must be flexible. Rain in the morning means activities will be postponed till afternoon and vice-versa – rain all day means some activities will not proceed unless you are happy to get wet. There is no partial refund available for day trips or components thereof that are not availed of or which cannot proceed due to inclement weather or logistical problems (eg unavailability of outboard fuel). The two free day trips are provided free as part of the package on a use-itor-lose-it basis.
4. Finschhafen is a mosquito area – bring your repellent and make sure you are up to date with your malaria medication. Monitor yourself for malaria symptoms for several weeks after returning from this trip.
