Tari & Southern HighlandsThe Southern Highlands is the most remote Province in PNG. It is relatively untouched and is rich in beauty and cultural traditions, with villages strewn across the lush valleys between the limestone peaks. It is home to the Huli people, known for their highly decoratede wigs and dances that mimic the mating rituals of the Bird of Paradise. The provincial capital, Mendi, sits at around 1620 metres above sea level and has a population of approximately 17,000 people. At a little over 1500 metres is Tari, better known for it's attactions to tourists, and home of the world renowned Ambua Lodge. Tari has approximately 8,000 people living in its district. Both localities have an airport, and are serviced on most days from Port Moresby by Air Niugini.
