Madang Resort Diving

A hidden jewel in the South Pacific, Madang is a totally unexpected montage of tribal cultures, immense beauty, friendly people and pristine diving. An absolute must to discover, whether you're a keen diver, an adventurer or just wanting to relax and let the world go by.   Ideally located at the entrance of Madang Harbour is the Madang Resort, PNG's most completely facilitated resort offering guests world class diving, restaurants, accommodation, amenities, reef cruises, water sports and more.

The Madang Resort was venue for the prestigious Pacific Island Forum for the second time. First in 1995 and again in October 2005 when the Prime Ministers and Presidents of 17 Pacific Countries meet to discuss regional issues. In 1995 the Madang Resort had a mere 65 rooms, in 2005 the rooms have increased to 150 with the opening of the new Kalibobo Village. Amongst the leaders was John Howard, Prime Minister of Australia, Helen Clarke Prime Minister of New Zealand, the Prime Minister of PNG Sir Michael Somare

The Resort offers more 150 suites, cottages, bungalows in three categories ranging from standard, deluxe, executive plus presidential bungalows and cottages. Most suites have private balconies overlooking the beautiful harbour or gardens. All have private bathrooms, split system air conditioning, ISD telephones, colour TV with 20 satellite channels, radio, refrigerator and mini bars in de-luxe and executive suites.

The facilities include an olympic-sized salt-water swimming pool, a children's wading pool plus secluded rools in the Raffles Wing and Villas. A Dive ship is located neat the marina. The Forum Park provides an excellent venue for cultural events, a tennis court and heli-pad. In the main complex there are shops, an art gallery, MTS Tour/Cruise Office, a business Centre, hair salon, restaurants, bar and access to the Sana Convention Centre.

In the grounds there is a "Haus Tambaran" (Spirit House) where you can see carvings, bilums and other handicraft being made by the Sepik people. There are rare native orchids within the grounds as well as aviaries, animals and birds indigenous to PNG and content to remain in the confined of the resort hotel. Niugini Dive Adventures is based at the Madang Resort Hotel in Madang and Malagan Lodge in Kavieng. The PADI facility provides instruction, equipment hire and daily excursions to the many spectacular sites in Madang and New Ireland. In addition to the land based dive services, NDA operates a dive shop aboard the 'Melanesian Discoverer' on all island cruises, combining the best of two worlds - above and below. The 'Aqua Venture' also is available to undertake over night dives to the offshore islands of Kar Kar, Bagabag and Long Island. Apart from diving and snorkelling NDA undertakes game fishing charters or local fishing from small boats or canoes and it is possible to jet ski, windsurf and/or water ski from the resort marina.

The warm, fertile waters that surge through the many passages and channels in the barrier reef around Madang make the ideal environment for a vast range of marine life. Marine Biologists from all over the world make pilgrimages to the Madang waters to study their wonders. For sheer colour and diversity of life, the seas around Madang have no rival.

Although you can enjoy world-class diving only minutes from the Madang Resort, the best spots are a little more remote and require more effort to get to. Undoubtedly, the most exciting destination is Bagbag Island, lying 32 nautical miles off the coast. This small island has several excellent harbours that were put to good use by the Japanese Navy during WW2. These were the only foreign people to inhabit the island in any numbers and today there are only the delightful village people to greet you. Approximately 10km in length and 25km wide, the island was one of many peaks of a long mountain range pushed up from the sea floor by cataclysmic volcanic forces thousands of years ago - the peaks surround an extinct volcano.

The island's close neighbour, Karkar, is still an active volcano. The other peaks remain underwater, sheer pinnacles that spear from thousands of feet to within 15 feet of the surface - being so far from the mainland there are no estuaries too muddy or soil the crystal clear waters.
