Many of the activities will have you in remote areas at lunchtime where there is no food available and we would recommend talking to Madang Lodge about their set lunch packs which can be preordered and taken with you. 1. Harbour Cruise – a 3 hour cruise around the Madang Lagoon area with optional swimming at some of Madang’s uninhabited islands. Pickup from Madang Lodge at 8am and expect to be back at the hotel around 1pm. Organising a lunch pack recommended. 2. Island transfer –Boat transfer to one of Madang’s uninhabited islands. Spend one hour, half a day or bring some food and spend the entire day, swimming and snorkeling on a pristine island. You are likely to be the only people there! 3. Guided Canoe Experience – Your half day canoe trip begins through the pristine mangrove areas of the Madang Lagoon. The first stop is Panadau Island. Panadau is a typical coastal island village and here you will meet the people and see how they live. After Panadau, it’s off to Tabad Island. Tabad is a pristine uninhabited island which is a gazetted protected area. Here you can swim in clear blue water, walk on a soft white sandy beach and snorkel to see amazing fish life. After Tabad it’s back in through the mangroves to your starting point in Nitul village. Pickup from Madang Lodge at 8am and expect to be back at the hotel between 1 and 2pm. Organising a lunch pack recommended.
4. Madang “Reef Teach” – For those who would like to learn more about Madang’s reefs, fishes and conservation efforts, a short “reef teach” experience before you head out on either a harbour cruise, island transfer or canoeing experience will guarantee that you have a greater understanding and ability to identify what you will see snorkeling.
5. Fishing - We offer the following option for fishing: 1. Fishing with the locals on a banana boat. This is “no frills” fishing on a banana boat without a cover and basic hand lines for trawling. As there is no cover on the boat, recommended departure is 6am with a return around 9am before the sun gets too hot. Maximum 4.
VILLAGE EXPERIENCES 6. BilBil Village – a half day tour to BilBil village. Traditionally the people of Madang built and sailed “lakatois” which were used to trade. BilBil village produced and traded clay pots which were used for cooking and water storage. The people have resisted any modernization of their pottery making and continue to produce pots in the same traditional way as they have always done. The ladies will show you how the pots are produced from raw clay through to firing and you are guaranteed to be amazed at their craftmanship . While in BilBil village there is also an option to watch a traditional SingSing. Pickup from Madang Lodge at 8; 30am and expect to be back at the hotel around noon. 7. Riwo Village – half day tour. To the north of Madang town is Riwo village. While the people of BilBil traded clay pots, the people of Riwo traditionally traded bilums and grass skirts. After a welcome drink of “kulau” and a chance to use your “knife skills” to open your own coconut, you will venture off for a walk through the village including traditional food gardens. After returning, enjoy a fresh juice made from local bananas, paw paw etc while watching a coconut scraping demonstration where once again you can try making your own coconut milk.
8. Idado theatre group (Sing Sing). If you only see one SingSing in Madang, this should be the one. The local people will dress in traditional “bilas”, sing traditional songs and beat a variety of drums. Incorporated in the SingSing is a drama involving fishing, hunting, landownership issues and the dreaded “masali”. The SingSing group is from Riwo village and we can arrange for the group to perform in the village or we can bring the group to Madang Lodge for a performance. Travel Agents Enquiry Here
