Manus

Manus Island is the largest in the Admiralty Group, situated 2 degrees south of the equator. It's only airport is on the Island of Los Negros, joined to the"mainland" of Manus Island by a bridge on a sealed road, approximately 30kms from the main centre of Lorengau. There are literally hundreds of islands scattered throughout the province, many of which are within a few hours of the mainland by banana boat. For natural beauty, you will struggle to find better than here. Palm laced white beaches, spectacular sunrises and sunsets, unique birdlife and friendly locals all make Manus an unforgettable destination.

Unfortunately accommodation is at best, to backpacker standards. Even the Harbourside Hotel which had new suites and the pool added in 1994, has been let run down. However, in mid 2010, a new beachside eco lodge will open, with a range of activities on offer.

Air Niugini flies to Manus 3 times a week via Lae and Kavieng and Lutheran Shipping has a weekly service from Lae.

The climate is tropical, with average daily temperatures around 30 degrees celcius. The wettest months are June, July and August, when you can almost guarantee rain by 2.00 p.m. each afternoon.

All around Manus are relics from World War Two, many exactly where they were abandoned.
