Kokoda 11 Day Tour

From July 1942 to January 1943, in their heroic defence of our homeland, our brave young soldiers fought a  number of brutal battles along the Kokoda Track.

2012 will mark the 70th anniversary of the now legendary Kokoda Campaign. To highlight this anniversary, Back Track will conduct a number of special "70th Anniversary Treks" that will coincide with the dates that each of these battles were fought. A highlight of each Anniversary Trek will be the commemorative ceremony that will be held at  each battle site on the anniversary dates.  You are invited to join us in 2012 for a very special Kokoda experience.

The Kokoda Track is as significant to the history of Australia as Gallipoli. Like Gallipoli, Kokoda is symbolic of the remarkable values our soldiers displayed of mateship, courage, endurance and sacrifice. These are basic values that all Australians can aspire to as part of the true defining character of an “Aussie”. The privileged life we all enjoy today in Australia is due in no small way to the heroism of the men and women who fought and died  in foreign battlefields including New Guinea, and along The Kokoda Track.

We are occasionally asked by prospective Kokoda trekkers why the vast majority of our treks are in a North to South direction, commencing at Kokoda and finishing at Ower’s Corner.

Historically, the Kokoda campaign started on the Northern beaches and moved in a North to South direction from Kokoda to Imita Ridge. The courageous delaying tactics of the 39th Militia Battalion followed by the brilliantly devised fighting withdrawal of the AIF’s 2/21st Infantry Brigade, comprised the first phase of the campaign. Later, when the Japanese were ordered to withdraw from Ioribaiwa, the AIF’s 16th and 25th Brigades fought the second phase. The second phase of the campaign moved in a South to North direction.

We choose to walk the Track following the direction of the first phase of the campaign. However,we do operate a few treks each year, that trek South to North. These are  Team 3, Anzac Day treks, and 18 which incorporates the Fuzzy Wuzzy Day celebrations in Kokoda on November 3.
