Explore Tufi Adventure

Overview

The Tufi region offers some of the best scenery and ocean vistas in Papua New Guinea. It is also regarded as one of the top dive destinations throughout the world providing spectacular underwater photographic opportunities. Couple this with tropical rainforest covered mountains, mist-laden fjords and plane wrecks encapsulated in jungle vine provides the ideal environment for adventure trekking at it's best.

Your expedition begins on the water where you travel in outrigger canoes around the coastline stopping over at local village guesthouses. With an early morning start you trek up the headland in the direction of the distant twin mountain peaks. Late afternoon will see you arrive at the mountain guesthouse where local foods have been prepared for dinner. With the chance to rest and reflect on your days journey with others and the onset of nightfall it is time for a good nights sleep.

The last day of your expedition will take you down the mountain, through your trek masters village where lunch is provided by the local villagers made from fresh fruit and vegetables. After lunch is completed and our thanks given to our hosts we continue our expedition down the final headland and to our waiting outrigger canoe. Whilst moving across the glassy surface of the fjord friendly dolphin pods may be seen as they surface quite near to the canoes.

With our feet firmly on land we trek a short distance moving through Tufi village and onto Tufi Resort. With hot showers and a comfortable bed, exceptional meals and a drink, we can relax at last. The next day being devoted to diving, snorkelling and all things water orientated gives the group the chance to re energise and prepare for the flights home.

An absolutely sensational experience of discovery, learning and culture only available in Papua New Guinea - the land of excitement and beauty.

Itinerary

Day 1: TO THE LAND OF DISCOVERY

Boarding our International flight to Port Moresby with an excited group and the impending 3 hour flight (From Brisbane) gives rise to many a conversation about our forthcoming journey. Arriving in Port Moresby the group transfers by shuttle bus to a nearby Hotel for an early lunch. At approximately 4.00pm we board the shuttle bus which will take us to the Domestic terminal for transfer to Tufi Resort. An hours flight brings us to the beginning of our expedition - a tropical seaside resort with all the comforts of home and sensational views of the fjordlands.

Day 2: TUFI RESORT TO JEBU VILLAGE GUESTHOUSE

After enjoying a sensational breakfast on the Tufi Resort verandah we gather our backpacks and prepare for a short boat ride out of the main fjord towards the Coral Sea, around the coastline heading for a small secluded beach where lunch can be prepared. Local villagers entertain with song and dance dressed in traditional clothing translating a tale handed down by their elders. Local fruits and vegetables may also be available.

Once lunch has been completed the group climbs aboard outrigger canoe or motor driven boat to our final destination for the day - a sensational seaside guesthouse perched on top of a small headland. After the group has settled in and been welcomed by the local guesthouse owner and his family there remains a few hours to enjoy a cool swim, relax by the ocean, read a book or learn how to fish the local way. Just a perfect start to an amazing experience.

Day 3: JEBU VILLAGE GUESTHOUSE TO TWIN MOUNTAINS GUESTHOUSE

An early wakeup is required for today's journey - trekking towards and up to the twin mountain peak guesthouse. It is on these mountains that fearless American airmen lost their lives when their aircraft plummeted to earth during the Papua New Guinea war campaign. These aircraft wrecks will be our discovery lesson as their last moments in flight are recounted by our Trek Master. Today will be the group's first full trekking day across open ground that will sizzle with heat and then transform into tropical rainforest as we ascend the twin mountains. On arrival at the mountain guesthouse we are greeted by our trusty local crew who have prepared our lodgings and have water on the boil for the evening meal. A cooling swim and clean up in a nearby mountain stream is also welcomed by the group.

Day 4: TWIN MOUNTAINS GUESTHOUSE TO TREK MASTER’S VILLAGE

Again an early rise is needed to allow plenty of time to explore the aircraft wrecks before heading down the mountain. With all gear ready and packed we begin our days trekking down and out of the tropical rainforest and into the open ground prior to reaching our trek Master’s village. Upon reaching our final village guesthouse stopover we can relax and have a cool swim in the nearby stream, chat with the local village people, perhaps even purchase a small gift for your family back home in Australia. As the expedition nears an end time is spent as a group talking and reminiscing about the past few days - days of discovery and learning, enjoyment and bonding with friends.

Day 5: TREK MASTER’S VILLAGE TO TUFI RESORT

We set off early and meander down through the outlying village huts towards the fiord headland where our outrigger canoe gently rocks on the in coming tide. With the group safely on board and backpacks secured we are paddled across the waters glassy surface, being kept company by friendly dolphin pods, to the opposite fjord headland. Disembarking we trek the short distance into and through Tufi village and onto Tufi Resort.

Day 6: TUFI DIVE DAY

Once we have returned to Tufi Resort we enjoy a sensational dinner on the verandah and a good nights sleep in preparation for our diving and snorkelling tomorrow. The crystal blue waters and world class reef areas provide underwater scenery unique to this region. For the fisherman we are able to throw out a couple of lines on our return journey from the reefs. A great way to spend your day in tropical paradise.

Day 7: TUFI REST DAY

This day is spent relaxing and enjoying each others company, preparing your gear for return to Australia, looking around Tufi village or just having a swim in the resort pool. Often people will gather on the comfy lounges spread around the pagoda with a bottle of wine reminiscing about their journey and planning the next adventure. The evening meal is served on the deck over looking the main fjord and consists of sensational seafood, wine and crusty bread cooked by the Tufi Resort chef. As the evening wears on and the wine bottles become empty, fatigue finally catches up with us, saying good night to our hosts and head for our comfortable lodgings.

Day 8: TUFI RESORT TO BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA

An early breakfast must be had to allow time to pack and say our good byes to our hosts, walk leisurely down to the Tufi airstrip for the hour flight back to Port Moresby. Upon arrival in Moresby we board a mini bus with all our gear for a short tour of the Port Moresby area ending up at the Royal Papuan Yacht Club for an early lunch. Approximately 1 1/2 hours before our International flight leaves we head back to the International Terminal for check in and Customs clearance. Once aboard the International flight we settle down for the 3 hour flight back to Brisbane or onto other ports and home to waiting family.

An absolute tremendous journey through magical seascapes and tropical rainforest mountains, experiencing culture and hospitality not found anywhere else in the world - only Papua New Guinea can provide such splendour.
