Betty's Lodge

Situated at the foot of Mt. Wilhelm, Betty's Lodge is a mountain lodge that provides hospitality for birdwatchers, orchid lovers, trekkers and backpackers alike. The Lodge is about 10 minutes from Kegesugl airstrip and takes around 3 hours by road from Kundiawa airport and 5 hours from Mt Hagen airport. There are a total of 37 beds, rooms in the form of bunks and twin rooms with a shared shower and kitchen facility. Activities includes cultural performances, trekking, bushwalking, birdwatching, sightseeing and mountain climbing. There is also a trout and rabbit farm run by the Lodge.

Getting to the lodge can be a hazzard, as the road is in a terrible state of disrepair. The road leading from the highway is only 42 kms long, but takes over two hours in the back of a Landcruiser Troopcarrier. It is worth the drive, however, as Betty, Peter and their staff will make you feel very welcome.

For the Mount Wilhelm climbers, a typical schedule would be as follows:

Set off after an early lunch up to base camp, which is a 3-4 hour trek. Settle in for the night in your swag after a bush meal.

Very early the next morning, trek to the summit, which will take around 6 hours, arriving around sunrise. Breakfast at the summit and a morning of taking in the views (if it is a clear day, you can see the coasts to the north and south), and in the afternoon, and depending on your fitness level, you can either trek back down to base camp, or continue back to Betty's Lodge.

For the nature lovers, there are plenty of orchids and animals around, and for the birders, there are species that are endemic to this region. We should have a list of birds here soon.
